WHAT YOU SHOULD DO AND DO NOT DO FOR AN INTERVIEW

You Should:

  • Wear formal attire. You should look presentable, neat and clean.
  • Know the location of the Interview venue. If you are not sure, do some homework - make sure you know the time taken to arrive at the destination, how to get to the destination and if you are driving, ensure if parking is available.
  • Be early for interview. Ensure you are at least 10 minutes early - this will help you to get comfortable with the environment.
  • Look and behave confidently - Firm Handshake, Eye Contact and Smile is important.
  • Know you interviewer's name and title.
  • Ask for clarification if you are not sure of the question. Answer the questions confidently and give examples where necessary.
  • Prepare some questions to ask but avoid asking questions related to salary, off days and vacation leave - This will leave a bad impression on yourself.

You should not:

  • Give negative remarks about your previous employer or anyone!
  • Give an impression that you are not serious about the interview.
  • Show that you are desperately looking for a job.
  • Err or Umm while being interviewed - It shows that you are not prepared.
  • Fake or falsify any documents or information.
  • Slump or move too much while sitting infront of the interviewer.

Do Not Spoil Your Job Opportunity

If you are eager in your job seeking, you tend to make simple error along the way. Ensure you :

  • Do not say too much! Yes you are eager to get the job but do not give out too much information to potential employer
  • Inform your family and friends that you are seeking new job opportunity. By doing this, you may get referred to a job or made known of a job opening
  • Listen carefully to the question and answer accordingly. Do not give lengthy information neither one word replies.
  • Wait for the interviewer / employer to offer the job rather than asking when you could start.
  • Know the salary range for the job that you are applying. Do not ask too high or too low.
  • Are well prepared for the interview. An interviewer usually takes note if the interviewee has knowledge about their organization and business nature.
  • Take ownership of the negative points in your CV – such as job hopping.
  • Stay focused in the interview session. Do not get distracted with anything that is happening outside the interview room – should the room has glass panel.

You need a good CV or Resume to promote yourself in the current competitive job market. Your CV or Resume speaks for you before you speak to your interviewer.

So, how do you create a CV that speaks for you?

  • Responsibilities
  • Specialisation

You should name two references in your CV – namely one academic and one employer. You should include their name, position, address and contact details. But remember to get your references permission before giving out their information and also keep them posted on your career movement.

If you do not have enough space, then just state that references is available on request.


When you write your CV, ensure that:

  • Your CV is for a specific job – Ensure that you have mentioned all skills that is listed on the job advertisement. You may use back the same words on your CV.
  • Indicate what is your contribution to the company – Do include your achievements and results achieved.
